Cigarette smoking remains the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States. Cigarette smoking kills more than 480,000 Americans each year.1 In addition, the United States spends more than $300 billion a year on smoking-related illness, including more than $225 billion in direct medical care for adults and $156 billion in lost productivity.

In 2019, an estimated 14.0% (34.1 million) of U.S. adults were current cigarette smokers. Current cigarette smokers were defined as persons who had smoked ≥100 cigarettes during their lifetime and now smoked cigarettes either every day or some days. This editorial illustration is made to showcase the deadly poison that is killing everybody slowly and steadily.
